Decking

Talk to me about decking, there's a load round the back garden and I noticed this morning that the sealant seems to have eroded away.
It's almost back to the colour of the wood in places and other patches seem fine.
What kind of stuff to I need to slather it in so that it doesn't fall apart? It's been coated in the bog-standard Ronseal decking protector once a year but to be honest that seems to be utter shite.

Russ, jet washing to remove algae from the facings. Pointing tools to remove growth from the joints. Weedkiller to prevent re-growth.
I reckon my patio and block paving take up farm more time than my decking. And look worse to be honest.
You're over cleaning it if that makes sense! Just throw down THIN bleach, brush it around, leave it to do its job and it will remove algae from the joints and the stones.

Did mine 10 years ago,10x3m to be fair at the time I worked for a building firm so got good quality thick boards 35mm for a decent price. Treated it most years after a spring time jet wash. Had to replace a couple of boards last year due to rot, mainly my fault in placing the joists in the wrong area and not putting enough end grain preserver on. Apart from that the boards are good, the last two years I have just coated them with cheap rom seal fence stain (thick coat) and it looks as good as the expensive decking stain.
When it comes to replacing it, I will probably pave it, but that is as much to do with the kids getting older, so falling over isn't and issue as anything else.

I know wood comes from trees which are outside you plank but they are protected by bark.
Decking needs looking after, treating etc etc. Paving is the way forward. The rain this year has fucked our decking (but it probably wasn't in best condition anyway.)

Really?
Decking made from wood.
Wood comes from trees.
Trees come from outside.
External wooden structures have been known to survive for hundreds of years.
I wonder what we could be doing wrong...
Nothing wrong with decking (unless its Steve P's), but its normally made from softwood which needs some maintenance.
If propery looked after it should be good for at least 30 years.
And decking is not a rat-magnet. Damp places in shelter are great for rats though.
I've had decking at my last two houses and just put 3" deep of gravel underneath, and hey presto - no problem. Rats can't walk through gravel beyond a certain depth.

Going to rip shit loads of it up in my back garden. We don't have the weather for decking. Have it paved. Looks just as good and is low maintenance.

I dont do decking,rats love it, have pulled up 20 in the last 4 years paving will be your best bet, . if your having a patio you want 4in mot type one hardcore 2in thames wash sand cement bed mixed at 5+1,lay paving point up 3+1, use people on checkatrade.if you live in surrey or sussex give me a call.

Rip it out and put decking in. As overbyer says, once someone has the death slide you'll want it out.
Was thinking about having it when we had our garden done last year as it was so uneven, but saw our neighbour go arse over tit on his twice and went for having the whole thing levelled (23 tonnes of material needed to do that!) with a patio and artificial grass put in instead. Cost more, but well worth it

You need to pressure jet it properly and oil it when it needs it. If you do it once properly, it shouldn't need doing again for 5 years or so.
I'd use Danish Oil and ignore the products called Decking Oil etc.
Don't varnish, as this can lift. Oil soaks in and stays there, making it impossible for water to penetrate.
